I would make all sorts of things, from beaded jewellery to crocheted hacky sacks. Some kids even had me draw temporary tattoos on their arms with micron pens, embellishing them with the names of their latest crush. Tell us about your previous working situation. I’d worked at quite a variety of jobs, from retail and food service to daycare. I was working at a daycare center full time when I decided to quit and become my own boss. When you first started selling on Etsy, did you have dreams or goals of eventually quitting your day job? I’ve always had the goal of one day being able to be my own boss. I really wanted to be able to stay home with my children, and it was really important to me that I’d be able to support them on my own. (I was a single mom at the time.) I had no idea that I’d be able to do it through online sales. I was picturing something more “brick and mortar,” but this is actually much better for where I am in life, currently. The first time I saw Etsy I think my heart nearly stopped.

Two grade seven girls came to the staff room to make some jewellery with the beads I bought. I also had a teacher make one! It reached the time for the next lesson to start and she had not yet finished. She was in no hurry to finish either! Eventually she decided she should better go to teach her class and finish it later!

I like to support local brewers, Mrs Velkyal and I enjoy days out fruit picking in the counties surrounding Charlottesville, and then making jams, chutneys and booze with the produce, we sometimes wander up to the farmers markets in the area and see if there is anything of interest (cynical aside, I really didn’t know that bead jewellery grew on a farm!). So yes, in a perfect world, I would be happy to buy most of the stuff I eat and drink from local suppliers. I have said many times that one of the things that Mrs V and I both love about this part of Virginia is that it is so booze friendly, wineries aplenty, a slew of good breweries, cider makers and even distillers. Yes, it is good to be a drinker in central Virginia.
