Obsessed: Sarah Swell Jewelry
Lately I’ve been getting more into jewelry than I used to be. Partly because I’ve been styling more shoots and witnessing firsthand the power of a fabulous necklace or ring to make a photo; partly because a girl can’t live on clothes and shoes alone; and partly because I recently had the honor of meeting jewelry designer Sarah Swell, and I’m addicted to her whole line! Sarah is an East Coast transplant to San Francisco and her incredible creations have me dreaming of gold and silver, diamonds and gems. But not in a glitzy glamour way. In a hewn from the earth, understated, layer them one-on-top-of-the-other-and-never-have-too-much kinda way. Plus Sarah’s the sweetest, most humble talent in town. I can’t get enough! Above Photo: We Are The Rhoads for Rue Magazine. Styled by Anne Sage. (More on that shoot later!!) A few fave Sarah Swell pieces: Fish Hook Necklace. Crystal Bullet Rings. Fishbone Earrings. Art students were required to take a workshop class, and a friend signed him up for a course in fine metal. I think I only went three times, he recalls, but I remember thinking, This is something I could do Later, when I became fed up with the self-important fine-art world, I came back to it. He created his first collection in 2005, while still at university. My teachers weren’t that impressed, he says. They came around later, but at the time they didn’t like the idea at all. His inventive, slightly off-kilter jewelry incorporates shells, crystal, precious stones, metals, pearls, wood, and plastics.

Etcetera Jewelry
Remember Anthony ? I took his photo a little over a year ago and to this day it is one of my favorite shots so far since starting the blog. Well, I was so excited to hear from him recently when he wrote to tell me about local jewelry designer Meghann Sommer I checked out her website and immediately recognized her designs as the very same ones that I drool over every time I stop into Cairo for a little shopping. &c Jewelry is such a beautiful handmade mix of primitive organic materials and industrial chains and hardware. Each piece feels like it could go just as well with jeans and a t-shirt as it would with your little black dress on a night out. It is art like this that leads me to a question that I ask myself all too commonly: Why do people seek out mass produced accessories from big box stores??? Boys, next time you are looking to get your lady something that will send her over the moon steer clear of the mall and instead support a local artist like Meghann.

Emerging Designers C Enfants Perdus
Kings from days long gone used to wear jewels to display their wealth; chieftains in battles would have them set in their armor to cause fear in their enemies. Interestingly enough, after hundreds of years, mankind really hasn’t changed. People still use designer jewelry for much the same ways C except now, they’re also signaling other things C membership of a tribe, personal concepts, ideals, thoughts, beliefs. Aside from the mainstream, emerging designers have in 2010 presented the fashion world with a wide variety of indie jewelry to choose from. Gothic jewelers Enfants Perdus presented their 2010 collection, a fantastical line, scattered with skull rings, vines and precious materials cast in gold, and the subversive clash between man and nature. It is a collection that is dangerous, yet slyly subversive.

Kim Kardashian Accused Of Ripping Off Yet Another Designer
First of all, Kim Kardashian has a jewelry line and we’re sure it’s awful and will probably turn your skin green (really, you’re better off buying warped gold bangles at Forever 21 and gluing rhinestones to them). Anyway, jewelry designer and Hollywood favorite Alexis Bittar Che of the many statement bangles on actress’ wrists and seriously trippy lookbooks Chas declared he will no longer loan his designs to Kim for red carpet events because her jewelry line Belle Noel features a few pieces that look a little too much like his. This comes as a surprise to no one After all, she has do something in between endorsing useless products and being horrible. Though Bittar doesn’t come right out and accuse her of directly ripping him off, he does work in a nice little jab by suggesting it may not be her fault: You have to be very careful to pick and choose your battles. I haven’t talked to Kim about it, the truth is she might not even know.

i is for isabel
She did so, tossing the phone onto the seat next to her, lit a cigarette as she swung out of the driveway, then screeched to a halt, shifted and took off. Seven minutes later, she was zipping into the parking lot where August waited. She’d worn her hair down today, Isabel noted, which meant she hadn’t left herself enough time to do more than dry it and run a brush through it. Good, she thought. Now I won’t feel so thrown-together. But, still, August definitely appeared to take a great deal of time with her appearance. Shoulder length brown curls gleamed, even without the sun’s help. Her face was painted, as were her nails. She’d chosen silver jewelry, today, Isabel noticed. Just a few piecessilver hoop earrings, a watch, the ring on her right ring finger. The same ring she always wore. The one given to her by her spineless twit Cool it, Isabel. Here, in her closest friend, was class, glamour subdued, style. Here, in herself, was sloppiness, blandness, comfort rather than fashion.

I couldn’t believe that I didn’t get a head to shot of my outfit, but back in my bathroom, I tried to catch a self photo so you could see the dress up close. The wrap gave it just the edge of sophistication and color that I desired, but I am still on the look out for some long silver rope type necklaces. That would have completed it and I haven’t been able to find any second hand. I gave it my all, but I will be buying some new very soon. In lieu of the perfect necklace, I took two that I already owned and doubled them up to give an extra pop. The silver hoop earrings were from Target for about $2. When you add costume jewelry to a classy outfit, the inexpensive factor just blends right in and I love that. My whole outfit, with the earrings, rings up at around $10. Let me walk down that runway at Fashion Weekdo you think they’d be open to a new category?

Preparing to Bead South for the Winter
Since its snowing once again here in Massachusetts, I decided it was the perfect day to announce a great opportunity that has recently come my way. Remember when I went bead shopping in NYC back in September? Well, one of the shops I visited was Margola on W. 37th Street I hung around for awhile just looking and shopping for beads. I also spent some time talking with the President of the company about my beadwork & my travels to the Czech Republic looking for beads, etc.. Well, I must have left an impression somehow, because 2 months later I was contacted by the President asking if I would like to work for Margola selling Czech beads in Tucson, AZ next month! Margola will be at the To Bead True Blue Show , and The Whole Bead Show They will also be at the GemMall show and the Holidome! It will be 2 weeks of hard work, but it’s a very good opportunity! Plus, it’s the perfect time to leave the Northeast.

Summing Up the Fruit Beads
Okay guys, here are the rest of the fruit beads!! I mentioned yesterday that I found three little $1.00 baggies of miscellaneous beads at a local bead shop, Ally Beads. I was so excited to find these glass fruit beads that I dug around so much in the treasure chest that I am SURE I got all the pieces of fruit! There was something about it that reminded me of being at a kid’s carnival in elementary school!! :) So, to sum it all up, the total take for $3 was: 1 banana 1 lime 2 oranges 2 bunches of grapes 4 lemons in addition to: 36 bicones and 5 miscellaneous beads to play with! Phew, that was a great haul and I am so happy that so many of you shared your ideas yesterday!! If you haven’t had a chance to share yet, please let me know in this post what you think I should do with these beads!! :) I can’t tell you how much I LOVE virtual beading with you!!

And all this doesn’t REALLY bother me. It is just reality. Remember I don’t like complicated and I don’t chase my tail. I buy stuff (for me) during the year. I just don’t (usually) for the holidays. So no big deal. Except, I did do birthday gifts for myself this year (March 27, 2010 was my 49 th birthday). I paid full price for a short denim jacket that was stellar. And I bought several short necklaces from my beloved bead shop. I had long necklaces, but these were short, designed to fall just at the throat. And I gave these to the middle child to put away for my birthday. Then the day of my birthday was jammed packed. So I ‘opened’ them the next day. I was saying things like .

Beading With Glass Seed Beads
Seed beads are tiny and are often used to accessorize different beading projects. They are made from all types of materials and the most widely known material for them is glass. Glass seed beads are used in many different ways. They are used in between large beads in making various beading designs; they are also can be used as spacers after a crimp and before inserting the main bead. Most often, they are used to finish an accessory or use it as an end bead. Other techniques that use seed beads is often stringing them to form a multiple strand beaded accessory and in peyote stitching with the use of five to seven strands to form a bulk necklace or bracelet. You’ll find that these pieces of art are most commonly made from manipulated glass which is wound to form tiny beads. They are heated to a point that the bead makers are able to mold them into small drops of glass. They come in different colors and designs but most of the time, their shape remains from round to rice grain shaped.

Beading Is Widespread, Worthwhile, Fun, Fascinating And Gratifying Hand Craft.
Due to the fact early occasions, individuals were conversant in beads, basically within the form of berries, seeds, stones and shells. Last Minute Handmade Gift Idea #1: Bead Bracelets
Over the next two weeks I’ll be posting 12 ideas for last minute handmade gifts. The first idea? Bead bracelets. Chances are you have some beautiful beads languishing in your jewelry box or craft stash which would be perfect for making elasticized bracelets. If you don’t already have a supply of beads, try your local thrift store. You should be able to pick up a couple of chunky bead necklaces for a few dollars. Most necklaces will have enough beads to make at least 4 bracelets. Look for big beads; the bigger the better. Also, make sure the beads have fairly large holes. Here’s how to make a basic bead bracelet: Cut a piece of thin elasticized cord 9 inches (23 cm) long. Begin by threading an accent bead, pendant, pom pom etc. onto the cord and sliding it to the middle. If you are using plain beads of all the same size, you can just choose an end and start threading beads on to it. Keep adding beads until the bracelet is approx. 7 inches (18 cm) long.

Designing With Accent Beads
Designing with accent beads can be an thrilling endeavor. I like to think of accent beads as a frame to put all the eye on the gemstone bead that I am making the primary attraction. Accent beads call additionally used to excessive mild the sample in a stone or mirror that pattern. I have also used valuable metallic accent beads in numerical patterns that observe the rules of sacred geometry to enhance the wearer, well being, targets or potential help them entry some character inside themselves resembling charity, compassion or insight into their own behavior. If one is having trouble meeting their objectives by not taking systematic step you can you a pattern of progression like the easy 1,2,3,4,5 repeat or 2, 5, 7, repeat. Another approach to accent a stone is by mirroring the properties of the stone corresponding to a moonstone.

Kit Delight
I’m getting lots of happy emails from everyone out there madly Power Puffing and Tri-Winging. It’s great. People exclaiming about the awesome cutout dinosaur puzzles, the Smarties, Dustin’s gorgeous drawings, and the knockout selection of colours in the 14 bead kit. We are so pleased that you like them. Dayle blogged about her kit, and included this picture. The dinosaurs were a big hit.
