Obsessed: Sarah Swell Jewelry
Lately I’ve been getting more into jewelry than I used to be. Partly because I’ve been styling more shoots and witnessing firsthand the power of a fabulous necklace or ring to make a photo; partly because a girl can’t live on clothes and shoes alone; and partly because I recently had the honor of meeting jewelry designer Sarah Swell, and I’m addicted to her whole line! Sarah is an East Coast transplant to San Francisco and her incredible creations have me dreaming of gold and silver, diamonds and gems. But not in a glitzy glamour way. In a hewn from the earth, understated, layer them one-on-top-of-the-other-and-never-have-too-much kinda way. Plus Sarah’s the sweetest, most humble talent in town. I can’t get enough! Above Photo: We Are The Rhoads for Rue Magazine. Styled by Anne Sage. (More on that shoot later!!) A few fave Sarah Swell pieces: Fish Hook Necklace. Crystal Bullet Rings. Fishbone Earrings. But really just visit the whole Sarah Swell site

Husam El Odeh Turns Everyday Objects Into High-End Jewelry
tastemakers Husam El Odeh Turns Everyday Objects Into High-End Jewelry 1/4/11 at 4:35 PM Comment 1 Comment Comments Photo: Tomoko Suwa German jewelry designer Husam El Odeh originally studied painting at Hochschule der Kuenste in Berlin, with plans to become an artist. Art students were required to take a workshop class, and a friend signed him up for a course in fine metal. I think I only went three times, he recalls, but I remember thinking, This is something I could do Later, when I became fed up with the self-important fine-art world, I came back to it. He created his first collection in 2005, while still at university. My teachers weren’t that impressed, he says. They came around later, but at the time they didn’t like the idea at all. His inventive, slightly off-kilter jewelry incorporates shells, crystal, precious stones, metals, pearls, wood, and plastics.

Etcetera Jewelry
Remember Anthony ? I took his photo a little over a year ago and to this day it is one of my favorite shots so far since starting the blog. Well, I was so excited to hear from him recently when he wrote to tell me about local jewelry designer Meghann Sommer I checked out her website and immediately recognized her designs as the very same ones that I drool over every time I stop into Cairo for a little shopping. &c Jewelry is such a beautiful handmade mix of primitive organic materials and industrial chains and hardware. Each piece feels like it could go just as well with jeans and a t-shirt as it would with your little black dress on a night out. It is art like this that leads me to a question that I ask myself all too commonly: Why do people seek out mass produced accessories from big box stores??? Boys, next time you are looking to get your lady something that will send her over the moon steer clear of the mall and instead support a local artist like Meghann.

Emerging Designers C Enfants Perdus
Kings from days long gone used to wear jewels to display their wealth; chieftains in battles would have them set in their armor to cause fear in their enemies. Interestingly enough, after hundreds of years, mankind really hasn’t changed. People still use designer jewelry for much the same ways C except now, they’re also signaling other things C membership of a tribe, personal concepts, ideals, thoughts, beliefs. Aside from the mainstream, emerging designers have in 2010 presented the fashion world with a wide variety of indie jewelry to choose from. Gothic jewelers Enfants Perdus presented their 2010 collection, a fantastical line, scattered with skull rings, vines and precious materials cast in gold, and the subversive clash between man and nature. It is a collection that is dangerous, yet slyly subversive.

Kim Kardashian Accused Of Ripping Off Yet Another Designer
First of all, Kim Kardashian has a jewelry line and we’re sure it’s awful and will probably turn your skin green (really, you’re better off buying warped gold bangles at Forever 21 and gluing rhinestones to them). Anyway, jewelry designer and Hollywood favorite Alexis Bittar Che of the many statement bangles on actress’ wrists and seriously trippy lookbooks Chas declared he will no longer loan his designs to Kim for red carpet events because her jewelry line Belle Noel features a few pieces that look a little too much like his. This comes as a surprise to no one After all, she has do something in between endorsing useless products and being horrible. Though Bittar doesn’t come right out and accuse her of directly ripping him off, he does work in a nice little jab by suggesting it may not be her fault: You have to be very careful to pick and choose your battles. I haven’t talked to Kim about it, the truth is she might not even know.
